There are many different layouts used when puting the cards out for areading. One of the most useful is the Celtic Cross.
First, a card is chosen to represent the person questioning the cards. It is then "covered" by the card numbered "1" in the diagram showing the present circumstances the questioner finds themselves in.
The card labeled "2" is the card that crosses the questioner, and deals with the immediate challenge the questioner faces.
The card "3" is considered the crowning card, and represents the best that can be achieved based on existing circumstances (if they are not changed or acted upon); and the card "4" Indicates the basic influences, already passed into actuality, which existed in the past that are directly affecting the present events.
Card "5" is a card that shows the most recent events or influences that have just passed or are currently taking place, and "6" is the sphere of influence that is coming into being in the near future; indicates events in the next few days or weeks.
Card "7" represents the attitude the questioner brings to the reading.
Card "8" represents the environment the questioner finds themselves surrounded by, and "9" s the card representing the questioner's hopes and/or fears.
Card "10" in the Celtic Cross spread is often said to represent the best that can be made of the circumstances.
